Regional unemployment rate in January dropped to 4%

Unemployment rates across northwest BC dipped to four per cent in January according to Stats Canada.

A month prior, that mark was 4.7 per cent and a year ago it was 6.4 per cent.

“We had 3,100 unemployed people [a year ago] and this past January we had 1,800 unemployed people,” said Labour Market Analyst Vince Ferrao.

The month prior, 2,200 people were unemployed.

He added the drop in unemployment was due to fewer people of working age in the region.

43,400 people were employed in the region last month compared to 44,400 a month prior.

Across the province, the unemployment mark was six per cent, up from 5.9 per cent in December.

The federal mark also went down, with a 6.6 per cent mark compared to 6.7 the month prior.
