The BC YMCA has been selected to operate the proposed new Ranger Park childcare facility to be built by the Town of Smithers.
This was done during tonight’s (Tuesday) town council meeting and is a step towards applying for a grant to construct the new building.
A main concern brought up during public engagement is the increased traffic on Princess Street and 16th Avenue.
“This past Saturday, there was a plant sale happening at Ranger Park and there were cars everywhere,” said Councilor John Buikema.
An exact location within the park has yet to be decided, with three options near the intersection being considered.
More public engagement sessions will be held once a contractor is confirmed.
Councilor Frank Wray gave the motion for YMCA to operate the lone opposing vote.
“When I think about the discussions, we had about the airport water system and how badly it went over budget,” he said.
“The exact same thing is going to happen with this childcare facility, and we seem to be okay with that.”
The YMCA made their proposal to operate the facility last year, and public engagement shows a high demand for more childcare spaces in the community.
