Several service organizations will be sharing advice about wildfires as part of Emergency Preparedness Day.
The event is being held by the Chinook Emergency Response Society at the Francois Lake Community Hall on May 3rd.
“We’re there to educate and inform people what services are available to them during an emergency,” said Director Sheila Olsen.
At the event there will be the RCMP, BC Wildfire, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officers, TC Energy, Rio Tinto, and BC Ambulance.
This is primarily targeted at residents living in the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako Electoral Area E around Francois and Ootsa Lake.
Along with talks, various prizes will be up for grabs and kids’ activities will be available.
“They’re going to have the children build a fire smart house with a prize at the end. It gives them an idea of how to make a fire smart home,” said Director Leona Peden.
Two of their firefighting trailers will also be available so residents can learn how to operate one.
They are stationed across the electoral area and available for anyone to use if they discover a fire.
“I believe there were 27 fires those little trailers put out before the blazes got out of hand,” said Peden.
The event is free to attend and runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
