The Town of Smithers is preparing to start its annual water flushing program.
Starting next week, a small amount of chlorine will be added to the water supply to help break up any dirt and silt in the system.
“This amount of chlorine that’s added to the water is very low and safe to consume,” said Communications Officer Samantha LeBlanc.
“We don’t typically chlorinate the water here so the taste and odor may be noticeable to some residents.”
If the taste or odor does occur, water can be left uncovered for a few minutes or boiled to remove the chlorine.
The main flushing will start May 5th and run until June 6th.
“Water may become discoloured during the actual flushing, so we do recommend running your taps for a few minutes until it clears,” said LeBlanc.
She also recommends running taps before doing laundry and to avoid using chlorine bleach.
If discolouration or chlorine detection continues, contact the town’s operations department.
