Spring melts see Bulkley and Nechako river levels start to rise

Rivers in the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District are starting to see a rise in water levels.

According to the BC River Forecast Centre, flooding seems to be unlikely this year.

“Because snowpack as a whole is very low in the region, that means is the snowpack driven flood hazard is reduced,” said Hydrologist Natasha Cowie.

Levels in the region were about 60 per cent normal this winter, but how they’re melting tells a better story.

“[High elevation] stations are not showing any signs of melting which is what we want to see and can expect melt up to about 1000 meters above sea level,” she said.

Melts this year are a little earlier than in previous years, starting to increase near the beginning of April, but have levelled off since.

The typical river level peak would occur in the middle of May.
