The province announced today (Thursday) a new committee started work to end systemic racism with eleven anti-racism advocates selected by the Ministry of Attorney General.
Included is Christine Marie AƱonuevo who is also the Executive Director of the Upper Skeena Development Centre in Hazelton.
āThe work of this committee will impact all of governmentās programs and services going forward,ā said Attorney General Niki Sharma.
āI thank the appointees for stepping up to help improve the lives of all British Columbians.ā
Their first meeting started yesterday (Wednesday) with several other meetings planned throughout this year.
āMy fellow committee members and I are committed to ensuring the voices of those most affected by racism are heard loud and clear through meaningful engagement with marginalized communities across the province, so we can finally move toward building a more equitable and just B.C. for everyone,ā said Committee Chair Hasan Alam.
The committee is also looking at developing anti-racism training standards for public bodies and providing input on public education and awareness strategies.
The group will also be working with the province on implementing the Anti-Racism Act with an action plan due June 1st, 2026.
