The Town of Smithers hosted a public engagement event yesterday (Tuesday) on the draft Parks and Facilities Master Plan.
This is a 10 year outlook document the town would use when making decisions on parks, along with creating a plan for Central and Heritage Park.
“We’ve had about 60 people come out. In the initial engagements we had, there were over 600 touchpoints of engagement in creating the draft plan,” said Communication and Engagement Officer Samantha LeBlanc.
Plans for Heritage Park include:
- Expanding the fenced dog park area,
- Moving the playground to one side of the current baseball diamond,
- Decommissioning the current baseball diamond,
- And creating a food truck area near the New Arena.
At Central Park, plans include:
- Relocating the outdoor rink to Heritage Park,
- Relocating the Sani station closer to Seventh Avenue
- Decommissioning the current and building a new Visitor Centre building,
- Creating an events lawn near the Queen Street, Highway 16 intersection
- And relocating the train car closer to Seventh Avenue.
Most of the feedback received has been about the reimagining of these two parks and what people are looking for.
A survey gathering feedback about the plan will be open until June 30th on the Town of Smithers’ website.
