BC Liberal Leader Candidate Mike Bernier is touring the north today to try and drum up support for his campaign.
Throughout the week he’s been stopping in communities along Highway 16 from Prince Rupert.
While in Smithers, Bernier said the Green-NDP partnership is an example of why he doesn’t want proportional representation a part of electoral reform.
“It is completely an unfair system, in my opinion, when you have two or three people elected in one geographical area of the province on Vancouver Island that are controlling all of the decisions that are made in the province,” says Bernier.
With the provincial election unfavourable for the Liberals, Bernier admits that not enough of the wealth of the province was reinvested in social programs when the Liberals were in power.
“We need to learn from that. We need to be changing our direction in making sure we’re focusing on what the needs are of the province.”
When asked about why the Liberals didn’t reach an agreement with the Northwest Resource Benefits Alliance, Bernier mentioned the fair share agreement in the northeast.
Bernier says he’s been telling local mayors that the northwest can’t copy the northeast.
“Of course, when you have all of the resource extraction that’s happening in the oil and gas sector right now in the northeast, there’s an argument to be had for why there’s a fair share agreement,” says Bernier.
He plans to make his way to Prince George today as a part of his tour of the north.
